This article explores the vision of the so-called "Metaverse." It covers the most common definitions, describes Facebook's transition to Meta, and discusses existing "Metaverse" platforms.
Definitions for the Metaverse
Most people envision the "Metaverse" as a three-dimensional internet. In this digital world, users move around with their created avatars, interact with each other, attend concerts, play mini-games, or watch immersive 3D movies together. This is made possible by the continuous advancement in VR and AR technology. However, many other definitions of the "Metaverse" are present in the tech industry. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella sees the "Metaverse" as a new platform for an era where the digital and real worlds come closer together, blurring their boundaries. Tyler Ishida of Sony Electronics also believes in the merging of realities: "Thanks to the resolution and quality of today's technologies, the Metaverse can appear as real to participants as real life." For former Twitch manager Shaan Puri, however, the "Metaverse" is more of a moment in time than a place.
Facebook is becoming Meta
In particular, the Facebook group has been driving the development of the "Metaverse" significantly in recent years. In October 2021, CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg announced the company's name change to Meta and spoke of a paradigm shift away from social media and toward the "Metaverse." The company will fully align itself with the development of the Metaverse in the coming years. Over 10 billion US dollars have already been invested for this purpose. In France, the so-called "Metaverse" Academy has opened, training professionals for the development and support of the three-dimensional internet. In addition, Meta has also been researching its own AR and VR technology, as well as in the field of "Artificial Intelligence," for several years.
First Metaverse Platforms
The "Metaverse" can also take place outside of VR headsets and AR glasses. The popular battle royale game "Fortnite" by Epic Games, especially favored by young gamers, serves as an established gaming and event platform. Celebrities such as Travis Scott and Ariana Grande have already hosted digital live concerts within the game. Companies from other industries are also jumping on the "Metaverse" bandwagon. Fashion and luxury brands like L’Oréal and Louis Vuitton are planning to market their products in the virtual world in the future. Meta's social VR platform "Horizon Worlds" shows what the "Metaverse" could look like in the future. The platform already includes the "Metaverse" living room "Horizon Home" and the meeting app "Horizon Workrooms." Within "Horizon Worlds," users meet with their self-created avatars at digital locations and spend time together. A similar concept is offered by the social VR app "Rec Room", which currently has more users than Meta's platform.
Conclusion
The vision of a "Metaverse" is fascinating and aims to enable, in the future, a person to appear as a lifelike avatar in a friend's living room with the help of a VR headset, while they can see the person through an AR headset. Although there are initial approaches like "Horizon Worlds," the "Metaverse" is still a concept for the future.
