Discord Activities
Since 2015, for almost 10 years now, Discord has offered users and gaming communities around the world the opportunity to connect, socialize, play together and spend time with friends, like-minded people and fellow players globally. Over the last few years, Discord has prevailed over competitors such as Teamspeak and Skype with its features and has become the standard platform for gamers, streamers and their audiences, as well as companies and studios for internal communication and as a medium to exchange with their player base.
Over the years, Discord has provided its users a great time and unforgettable memories during lively conversations, watching videos together and gaming. Recently, Discord has taken the latter to a new level with a feature released in 2022.
Activities: a way to instantly enjoy shared experiences with friends, such as games and media, on Discord itself.
Activities is a feature added to Discords voice channels in 2022. Starting an activity in a voice channel allows users to stream videos, movies, and series together, as well as play a variety of simple multiplayer games created by the Discord team.
At launch, this feature was only available on PC. From March 2023, Activities was also added to mobile devices, and since June 2023, these games and features have been available to everyone for free and without limits. Since then, Activities have been open to every user. Anyone in a voice call, regardless of whether in the desktop app, the web application, or on mobile devices, can participate in activities.
Discord can already offer a wide variety of different games and applications that can be started together in a voice channel.
For example, using Watch Together you can enjoy YouTube videos or music together. You can also listen to music and podcasts together using Rythm, Amazon Music and TuneIn. Also classic games such as chess, checkers, poker and golf, as well as creative painting and party games such as Gartic Phone are available in Discords Activities selection.
Social Gaming
Especially in the context of in-house team building measures, Discord Activities offer completely new opportunities for companies and small studios, especially since the increase in home office and remote working since the Corona pandemic. Remote working often means a lack of social interaction, as the meeting point in the office can no longer be perceived. Also it’s often more difficult to build up the classic “we feeling” in a team online, in contrast to working together in the office alongside “real colleagues”. As a social interaction, daily (or even weekly) onboarding online on MS Teams or Zoom is usually not enough in socializing.
A great corporate culture is based on a team that works closely together.
For a team to achieve optimal results, however, its members must also have an exceptional team spirit.
As a communication platform, Discord and its activities offer the perfect basis for regular “social meetings” with games and joint team building activities, which enable harmonious and productive collaboration despite spatial separation through remote working.
Open to all developers
Since the end of September 2024, Discord Activities have been open to all developers. The in-app ecosystem and the embedded apps software development kit can now be used by all developers and games studios to create, publish and monetize their own games.
