What does VR mean?

The term “VR” stands for “virtual reality”. Special glasses are required for this. These glasses can display computer-generated content using a 3D engine and adapt to human vision. VR glasses therefore mainly appeal to the visual and acoustic senses and can therefore create an extremely believable experience. They are controlled using head movements or additional controllers.

What is VR used for?

VR glasses are often used for computer games. This makes the gaming experience something special. But VR can also be used as a tool for visualizations. This opens up a wide range of applications. For example, in the simulation, sports, film and animation sectors. VR is therefore not only suitable for gaming projects.

Can VR only be used for computer games?

No. The basic benefit is the display of 3D content on the glasses. This requires the development of dedicated VR apps. These apps can visualize different industrial use cases, for example. For example, large machines no longer need to be transported at great expense, as there are unlimited projection surfaces available in 3D space.

Realistic VR applications

With the help of photorealistic textures and realistic surface shaders, a very high level of realism can be achieved. Entire building complexes were even visualized there using VR. The experiences in VR are therefore very immersive and therefore remain in the memory. They are very different from traditional media.

How are VR projects implemented?

There are many ways to implement a VR project. All real objects can be created in 3D programs and displayed in VR. Modeling programs are often used for this. The most commonly used VR glasses are the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Playstation VR. Alternatively, there are special frames for smartphones that can be used to display VR apps on your own cell phone. These two options offer a similar media experience. Some VR projects require powerful computers, while other projects manage with less power.
