The "Iron Avenger" of the German Streamer Torro
We are pleased to share our project with Torro, a popular German streamer and content creator who has captured the hearts of audiences with his wit, charm and infectious energy. In this exciting project, we collaborated with Torro to bring his unique personality and humor to life in the world of virtual YouTubing, or VTubing.
VTubing is a rapidly growing phenomenon that enables any content creator to embody digital avatars and interact with their audience in real time. With advanced motion capture technology and sophisticated graphics software, VTubers like Torro can create virtual personas that are as expressive and engaging as their real-life counterparts.
In our collaboration with Torro, we've developed a VTubing model that showcases his talents and connects him to his fans in new and exciting ways. From gaming streams to live shows, there was a wide range of possibilities, which needed to be customized to meet individual needs. Torro's distinctive voice and style needed to be reflected in the form of a unique and engaging experience.
Our primary goal for this project was to create a virtual avatar for Torro that truly captures his unique voice and presence. From the way he moves to his facial expressions, we used advanced motion capture technology to create a digital representation of Torro that feels as real and authentic as possible.
But that wasn't all - we also explored new ways to engage Torro's audience and give viewers a more immersive experience. From interactive games and challenges to live showcasing of the VTubing model, we used the latest technology to bring Torro closer to its fans and create a more dynamic and engaged online community.
Creating a VTubing avatar involves several technologies and software tools from different disciplines. We used the following technologies to create Torro's avatar:
Motion capture technology - it is used to capture the movements of the actor's body and facial expressions.
3D modeling and animation software - it is used to create the digital avatar and animate it. Well-known representatives are, for example, 3ds Max, Maya or Blender. We used Blender.
A game development engine - we chose both Unity3D and Unreal Engine. The game engine is used to render the digital avatar in real time and create the virtual environment. We will go into more detail about the choice of engine in the chapter below.
Live streaming software - it is used to broadcast the performance to the viewers in real time.
Virtual camera technology - it is used to control the camera in the virtual environment and create dynamic shots. In our case, it was a conventional iPhone.
Facial recognition technology - it is used to capture the performer's facial expressions and map them to the digital avatar. Face recognition was also already available in the corresponding iOS version.
Both the Unreal Engine and Unity can be used to create a VTubing avatar, and both have their strengths and weaknesses.
The Unreal Engine is known for its faithful graphics and advanced rendering capabilities. It also has an integrated physics engine and a robust animation system, making it ideal for creating complex and realistic movements. Besides, the Unreal Engine has a large and active community, which means that developers have many resources to learn from.
On the other hand, Unity is known for its ease of use and flexibility. It has a simple and intuitive user interface that makes it accessible to developers of all experience levels. Unity is also very customizable, since a large number of plugins and add-ons are available to extend its functionality. In addition, Unity is cross-platform, meaning it can be used to create VTubing avatars for different platforms such as desktop, mobile, and VR.
Both engines are capable of creating high-quality VTubing avatars, and the decision in our case depended on the application area of the software. Since we wanted the live stream to reach the viewer smoothly, we implemented the performance-optimized variant with Unity3D and built the pre-rendered videos with the Unreal Engine.
Working with Torro on his VTubing model was an absolute pleasure! From the very beginning, Torro's easy-going and fun-loving personality made working on the project a pleasure. But don't let his laid-back nature fool you - Torro pushed us to the limit with his high standards and creative vision for his virtual avatar.
Throughout the project, we worked closely with Torro to bring his vision to life. From brainstorming sessions to testing and refining the model, we worked hand-in-hand to ensure every detail was just right. Torro's feedback was invaluable in helping us refine the model and create a virtual persona that truly captures his unique personality and style.
But even though we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to get the best possible results, the project was still fun and exciting. Torro's enthusiasm and energy were contagious, and we had a lot of fun experimenting with different animations, expressions, and interactions to bring his virtual avatar to life.
Overall, working with Torro on this VTubing project was a really cool experience. We're proud of what we've accomplished together, and we're excited to see the reactions of Torro's fans and followers as we launch this exciting new project.
