12 tips for Unreal users

Game production

Short description

In this article we will give you some tips on working with the Unreal Engine to improve your workflow.

1 - Focusing the camera on objects

If the camera is to follow a specific object, ‘Shift’ can be held down in Transform mode. If the object is then moved, the camera follows automatically.

2 - Moving objects

If an object is to be moved over a greater distance, the following trick can be used. Simply cut out the object, click where you want it to appear and press ‘\’.

3 - Move pivot point

If the pivot point of an object is to be moved, this can be done by pressing ‘Alt’ and the middle mouse button.

4 - Calculating with inputs

As with Unity, you can calculate with the values in the Transform area. If, for example, the scale is to be doubled, ‘*2’ can be entered after the value in the corresponding field.

5 - Measure distances

If the distance between two points is to be measured, the two points can be connected while the centre mouse button is held down. A line with the length of the distance then appears.

6 - Drop mesh to the floor

The ‘End’ button can be used to drop a selected object to the ground. It then appears on the nearest surface.

7 - Physics

This tip is useful when a physics simulation has been run and the result is to be stopped. After the simulation, simply press ‘K’ and then stop the simulation. Fallen objects will then remain in place.

8 - Saving camera settings

To save a camera setting, press ‘Ctrl’ and ‘1’. As soon as ‘1’ is then pressed, the position of the camera changes to the saved position.

9 - Camera speed

The speed of the camera can be easily adjusted. While the user is moving in the scene, the speed can be increased or slowed down using the mouse wheel.

10 - Command overview

If it is ever unclear which command triggers what, the command overview can be called up. To do this, simply enter ‘help’ in the console. A detailed list will then appear.

11 - Edit nodes

If several nodes are to be moved, all of them can be selected and ‘C’ pressed. The nodes are now a comment that can be easily moved. The connected nodes can also be coloured to provide a better overview.

12 - View Modes

There are various view modes that you can experiment with. Simply press ‘Alt’ and the numbers 1 to 8.
