VSeeFace: The Easy Way Into VTubing

Anyone who wants to start out as a VTuber quickly runs into one question: which software actually controls the avatar? One of the most popular and, at the same time, free answers is VSeeFace. The program transfers your facial expressions and gestures to a 3D model in real time, making the entry into VTubing and VStreaming affordable. This article explains what VSeeFace can do and what you need for it.

What Is VSeeFace?

VSeeFace is a free, highly configurable program developed specifically for virtual YouTubers and streamers. The focus is on reliable tracking and high image quality. The software controls the gestures and facial expressions of a digital avatar via a rigged 3D model. A regular webcam captures the facial movements, and with suitable hardware, arm and full-body movements can also be transferred.

On top of that, VSeeFace offers many fine settings. You can, for example, give the avatar a subtle aura or adjust the display of individual emotions. If no webcam is available, the virtual camera function helps: it does without head tracking and instead synchronizes the mouth movements based on the microphone. Configured correctly, the avatar can be used directly in VSeeFace as a virtual facecam with a transparent background. For how VSeeFace works together with avatar creation, see our detailed article The Techniques Behind VStreaming.

Hardware Requirements

The minimum is a webcam to control the avatar. You achieve better image quality with higher-quality hardware. Certain iPhone models with a depth sensor offer especially precise tracking. For transferring hand movements, a Leap Motion controller is worthwhile. Those with the necessary budget reach for a motion-capture suit, for example from XSens, which delivers exceptional quality.
