Tips for 3D Modeling

Games Production

Short description

In this article we give you tips and tricks on the subject of 3D modeling to become successful as an artist.

Work in correct scale

Correct scaling is one of the most important things when creating 3D models. Real units of measurement such as centimetres, millimetres or meters should always be used. If you are creating a 3D model based on a reference, you should adhere to the desired size. If you are creating a character, for example, you cannot work with millimetres.

Use References

The use of references is essential when creating 3D models. This is particularly important if there are no exact dimensions for the 3D model. A reference image can be loaded directly into the software and the model can be created based on it. Overall, there are two different types of reference images. The first is the so-called accurate references. These are, for example, construction plans or blueprints. The exact sizes and dimensions are listed on these. Reference images that are not accurate, i.e. images with an arbitrary view of the model, are rather unsuitable for beginners due to distortion effects.

Reduce Polygons

As a beginner in particular, it is easy to be tempted to make a model as detailed as possible. Conversely, this leads to a lot of polygons. However, such a model is much more difficult to handle. For this reason, you should always make sure to keep the number of polygons as low as possible during 3D modeling. If the model has to be revised afterwards, this saves time and, above all, computing power.

Use the softwares tools

Within most 3D software, there are a lot of options and tools that save the artist a lot of work and, above all, precious time. For example, you can use the symmetry function when modeling a person. This is because humans are symmetrical. So make use of such tools as often as you can.

Download free models

This is purely about saving time. If you are working on a project that requires many models, it is perfectly legitimate to use free and license-free models from the Internet. However, the file type must always be checked for compatibility with the software when downloading.

Never forget Saving

Contemporary 3D software is very large in terms of data volume and demands a lot of computing power from a computer. If the workload becomes too great, the entire program often crashes. Data or the entire work file can be lost. It is therefore advisable to save a project as often as possible and ideally to create a backup. Some software even has automatic saving.

Use Textures

The majority of 3D models in video games are not perfectly modeled. Instead, they have detailed and high-resolution textures. In 3D modeling, files with a small size and few polygons can be created. These can then be provided with “bump” or “displacement maps”. This means that not every detail of an object needs to be modeled. Just use textures!

Showcase your work

Rendering is the most important method for presenting your output. It is particularly advisable to use lighting to set the scene for the 3D object. So-called HDRIs are particularly suitable for this. An HDR file is a 360° panoramic image that contains information about light sources. With this data, it is then possible to illuminate a model in seconds.
