RPG Maker is a user-friendly program for creating JRPGs. The intuitive interface and pre-built tilesets eliminate the need for advanced programming knowledge and make game development accessible even for beginners.
RPG Maker 95 (1997)
The first version of RPG Maker, “RPG Maker 95”, was released for Windows 95. It offered mouse support and a basic desktop environment, but did not have preset textures.
“RPG Maker 2000” followed with improved functions. Mouse support was removed and the color depth was increased to 16 bits, although only 8 bits could be displayed simultaneously. The resolution was halved, making it easier to take graphics from Super Nintendo games. In particular, the ability to incorporate textures from Super Nintendo games became popular with this version.
Released towards the end of 2002, “RPG Maker 2003” responded to the wishes of the fans and introduced a “Dungeon Generator” and a combat system with a side view.
RPG Maker XP” was developed for Windows XP systems and introduced several new features. Notable improvements included doubling the resolution, jumping from 8 to 32-bit color depth and increasing the layer capacity from 2 to 3. The introduction of “facesets” enabled the high-resolution display of character dialogs, while the programming language was improved.
The successor to RPG Maker VX, “RPG Maker VX Ace”, offered support for new languages such as French, Italian and Spanish.
“RPG Maker MV” was an important milestone as it was the first version of RPG Maker to be compatible with MAC and Linux systems.
The latest version, “RPG Maker MZ”, offers an improved map editor, an automatic save system and an advanced combat system, among other things.
“To the Moon”, a game created with RPG Maker, was released in 2011 and has been available on Steam since 2012. It has been translated into several languages, including French, German, Russian, Polish and Spanish. The story of the game revolves around an organization that implants artificial memories into dying people to fulfill their last wishes. The emotional journey of an elderly man who wishes to visit the moon leads to tragic events and profound loss, making “To the Moon” a poignant and character-driven experience.
RPG Maker is an excellent tool for budding game developers with no programming skills to create captivating stories. The success of games such as “To the Moon” demonstrates the software's potential to create emotionally compelling narratives in the JRPG genre. As RPG Maker continues to evolve, there will undoubtedly be new opportunities for creativity and captivating gaming experiences in the future.
