This article aims to provide an understanding of redemption games by discussing their definition and highlighting some well-known examples. By exploring the different characteristics and variations of this genre, we can gain valuable insight into its popularity and cultural significance, particularly in the realm of arcade games.
Redemption games are very popular, especially in the arcade sector. Redemption games belong to the broader category of arcade games and are characterized by the fact that they reward players based on their scores. This sets them apart from traditional arcade games, which focus solely on gameplay and high scores without offering tangible rewards.
Rewards in Redemption Games usually come in the form of physical or digital tickets that players can collect and exchange for prizes available on site. Common prizes include stuffed animals and toys. However, it should be noted that the amount spent on the game often exceeds the actual value of the prize, which has led to some controversy and a negative reputation for Redemption Games. In some US states, such machines have even been banned due to these concerns.
A notable variation within the Redemption Games category is the “Merchandiser”. Unlike traditional redemption games, merchandisers give out prizes directly instead of issuing tickets for redemption. A well-known example is the “Claw Machine” or the “Crane Game”, where players control a joystick-controlled gripper arm to retrieve prizes, usually soft toys, through an opening.
In addition to merchandisers, there are various other forms of redemption games, which are often referred to as “medal games”. These games became popular in Japan from the 1970s to the early 2000s. In this system, real money is converted into medals, flat metal disks that are used to play. Unlike casino games, however, these medals cannot be exchanged back for money. Instead, players can exchange their medals for prizes, which distinguishes Medal Games as a sub-category of Redemption Games.
The world of Medal Games includes offerings from renowned companies such as Sega and Nintendo. These games can be divided into two sub-categories: the “Gambling Type” and the “Pusher Type”. The former emulates casino games, including virtual poker, blackjack and horse racing. In the latter, coins or medals are thrown into a machine that pushes the available medals forward. When a sufficient number of medals have accumulated, they are pushed over an edge and fall into an output tray. Some pushing machines even contain prizes that can be won directly by pushing them with medals.
Although redemption games, including claw machines, are still occasionally found in establishments such as casinos or fairgrounds, their popularity has waned significantly since their heyday. Nonetheless, gambling enthusiasts should consider experiencing a redemption game first-hand, as it offers a unique and nostalgic gaming experience.
Redemption games enjoyed great popularity in the arcade era. Although their popularity has waned over time, their influence is still felt, especially by those who grew up with this particular form of gaming. Although redemption games are relatively rare today, occasional sightings of pusher or claw machines in certain environments provide an opportunity for nostalgia and entertainment.
