Games Production
The term "Metroidvania" is derived from the combination of the two classic games "Metroid" and "Castlevania". Due to the similarity of their game mechanisms, this genre name was used for games that have comparable features. In this article, we want to explain the characteristic features of a Metroidvania.
Metroidvanias are basically classified as jump-and-run or platformer games, which are explained in more detail in the article “Platformer”. The gameplay in these games mainly consists of jumping over platforms, traversing the game world and regularly getting involved in battles with enemies. Furthermore, in Metroidvania games there is often no clear, linear objective on the map, instead players are encouraged to explore and explore the convoluted game world.
One of the most important aspects of Metroidvanias is the presence of initially insurmountable obstacles that separate the different levels or regions. Progress in these games depends on the player discovering or unlocking certain items or abilities that allow them to overcome these obstacles. Consequently, the gameplay of a Metroidvania involves a considerable amount of “backtracking”, where the player retraces their steps along previously explored paths multiple times, using newly found abilities or items to enter new areas.
“Metroid” series
The “Metroid” series, which was created in 1986 for the “Nintendo Entertainment System” (NES), includes numerous sequels and is still an iconic representative of the genre. Developed by Makoto Kano, Yoshio Sakamoto and Hiroji Kiyotake, the games follow the protagonist, bounty hunter Samus Aran, on exploration missions to alien planets. As previously mentioned, extensive backtracking is an important aspect of the gameplay, accompanied by battles against various creatures and skill-based challenges. Some parts of the series also contain elements of first person shooters (FPS).
The “Castlevania” series
The Castlevania series, which was released in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), is another typical example of Metroidvania games developed by the Japanese studio Konami. The games are about overcoming platforms and defeating enemies, including various horror creatures such as skeletons and bats. Players navigate through linear levels, each culminating in a boss fight. The protagonist wields a whip to defeat enemies, which can be upgraded as the game progresses. Other gameplay elements include finding hearts for healing and discovering secondary weapons in clay pots, such as throwing axes or boomerangs. The ultimate goal is to confront and defeat Dracula.
Dead Cells
Released in 2017, “Dead Cells” combines the roguelike genre with Metroidvania mechanics. Inspired by Castlevania, this 2D action platformer focuses on combat encounters. Players will encounter a variety of enemies, such as zombie-like creatures and amorphous blobs. The game features permanent upgrades and equippable scrolls that enhance the player's abilities. A fascinating aspect of “Dead Cells” is the roguelike feature, where the player starts over after dying.
Metroidvania games have enjoyed unwavering popularity for many years, with franchises such as “Metroid” and “Castlevania” still considered popular classics among gamers. Contemporary games continue to draw inspiration from the Metroidvania formula and incorporate similar mechanics to keep players hooked. Therefore, it is recommended that anyone interested in gaming should experience a Metroidvania to fully appreciate the genre's distinctive gameplay and enduring appeal.
