How does the Live2D Cubism software work?

Hard- & Software

Overview

Live2D Cubism is a paid software released in 2008 for rigging a two-dimensional avatar. Such an avatar can then be used, for example, in VStreaming. The program offers a free trial version lasting 42 days, which is designed to provide users with an easy introduction. This trial version includes almost all the features of the full version.

Workflow

To create a lively model from a static 2D illustration, the software first requires at least a PSD file of the corresponding character to animate. To later rig the drawing, all movable body parts, such as arms, legs, and even individual strands of hair, must be drawn on separate layers. Once the PSD file is loaded into the software, the user should divide the textures into a layout and then assign a mesh to each individual object. Live2D Cubism has an automatic function for this.

Creation of the actual model

Subsequently, using various editing tools in the Cubism editor, the character can be shaped for different facial expressions and movements. The user has access to several deformation tools for a variety of scenarios: one of these tools is the Deform Path, which is useful for creating dynamic deformations. Specifically, this means that objects with a mesh, such as hair or the mouth, can be moved along a deformation curve. The degree of deformation can be precisely adjusted. Also noteworthy is the Rotation Deformer. With this tool, movements around a single pivot point can be realized, such as for the neck or joints.

Animation using key frames

Once the character is fully modeled, the actual animation process begins. For this, the user simply sets the necessary keyframes on a timeline. Additional features allow for adding hair movements based on physical calculations or automatically generating lip-sync movements from an audio file.

Export the data

Finally, the created animation can be exported as a complete video file, animated GIF, or image sequence. With the pre-installed Cubism AE plugin, the software's files can also be imported into Adobe After Effects.

Areas of application

Live2D Cubism is used in various areas of media creation, such as for anime. With the Cubism SDK development kit, models created with the software can be used in user applications. Currently, SDKs are available for Unity, native applications, and various web browsers. As mentioned earlier, the software can also be used for creating VStreaming avatars.

Requirements

To use Live2D Cubism, a powerful computer (Intel Core i5 and 8 GB RAM) with a Windows (64-bit version; from 8.1) or macOS (from v10.14) operating system is required. Additionally, the computer should have internet access to perform the license authentication. Furthermore, additional drawing software, such as Adobe Photoshop, is needed to create a PSD file.

Conclusion

The program Live2D Cubism is a beginner-friendly and efficient method for animating 2D illustrations. It is not necessary to engage in time-consuming 3D modeling or draw each frame individually. Furthermore, the software ensures consistent quality of the original illustration across various media platforms. A positive aspect is that, thanks to the SDK development kit, Live2D can be used for a variety of applications, such as Unity or Cocos2d-X. On the downside, the few supported input formats (PSD, PNG, and WAV) are a limitation.
