The idea sets the whole project in motion. A good initial idea can be crucial for the outcome.
For example, do you already have an idea of what the cards should look like? Do you already know a specific rule? Or do you have a plan regarding the story? You can build on all these aspects. If you don't have a concrete idea, you can start with a classic brainstorming session. Think about what you haven't seen in any card game yet and write down everything that comes to mind.
Tell a friend or family member about your idea. What do they think of it? Feedback can be helpful from the start. The initial idea often becomes the core element or unique selling point of the game, so it should appeal to others as well.
If your friend or family member already has suggestions for improvement, revise your idea. Perhaps something completely new will come to mind; you should follow every creative insight. Once you've developed a mechanic, setting, or art style, you can move forward.
Now it's time to focus on the other areas. You've already developed the core mechanics of the game? Then try to find a suitable setting: What does the world in which the game takes place look like?
Did you find a cool art style for the illustrations? Think about how the game will play out: Whether there will be a round-based, point-based, or value system, and how it will work.
For the next step, you need a prototype. It's best to create one out of paper. You can draw the cards by hand or create them digitally and print them out. Keep in mind that this prototype is not final, so keep the effort and cost minimal.
Once the basic flow of the game is established, you should start testing as early as possible. Especially if the entire gameplay is not yet certain, detailed feedback can help uncover new ideas. In this phase, it can also be determined whether the game is fun or if something is still missing.
While testing, you should take notes so you can make improvements afterward. During the revision process, it's possible that completely new ideas will come to you; follow through on them.
