Society, Culture
Cosplay has become an integral part of games and pop culture. But what is it all about?
"Cosplay" (short for costume play) is a form of so-called "fandom," the heightened interest in media or people of contemporary popular culture. It involves making costumes and dressing up, usually publicly, at events as a fictional character from a computer game, manga, animated film, or the like. One should be aware that the term "cosplay" describes not only the fan practice, but also the costume itself.
The history of "cosplay" goes back as far as 1939. In July, hundreds of enthusiastic American science fiction fans met at the "World Science Fiction Convention" (Worldcon) in New York City. With the help of disguises, they slipped into the roles of well-known figures from science fiction literature. At that time, however, the term "masquerade" or "costuming" was still used. The actual term "cosplay" was first coined by anime producer Nobuyoshi Takahashi in 1983, after the phenomenon became increasingly popular in Japan. In the early 1990s, the first "cosplay" conventions were held in North America and Europe. With the advent of the Internet, as well as the ever-advancing digitalization, cosplay shifted more and more to online platforms, where large fan communities formed. It wasn't until the 2010s that the term "cosplay" gained global acceptance and has since become a genre in its own right on popular streaming platforms like Twitch.
A convention (meeting of like-minded people) is generally understood to be a major supraregional event, usually lasting several days, at which members of a particular fan scene meet and exchange ideas. Among the largest and best-known German "cosplay" events are the video game fairs “gamescom” and “DreamHack”, the anime convention “DoKomi” in Düsseldorf and the "Comic Con Germany". At these conventions, the cosplayers themselves become the attraction and the organizers usually organize a costume contest. Furthermore, there are workshops and lectures on the topic of costume making or similar.
There are now many ways to turn a cosplay hobby into a profession. Many companies, mainly from the film and games industry, rely on cosplayers as promotion. For example, they are used as booth personnel at trade fairs or similar. Many talented cosplayers earn their living by making high-quality costumes for companies or private individuals. For example, they work with game publishers and produce exclusive costumes for them. Cosplayers also act as brand ambassadors and develop their own products. Furthermore, cosplayers with large followings on social networks act as influencers and earn their money through advertising revenue, monetization or crowdfunding.
