The tech contact lens “Mojo Lens” wants to revolutionize the AR industry. This article will explain what it can do and when it will be launched on the market.
The initial research and development of an AR contact lens began back in 2008 under the strictest secrecy. In November 2018, the company made its first public appearance under the name “Mojo Vision” and was able to attract investment of around 50 million US dollars. Two years later, the “Mojo Lens” project was presented. Mojo Vision is now cooperating with the Japanese contact lens manufacturer "Menicon” and the investor capital now stands at over USD 205 million.
The current prototype of the “Mojo Lens” can display simple text, graphics and even videos. To do this, the contact lens projects the content directly onto the retina. This works even when the user's eye is closed. The operating system is controlled via the eye movement, which is tracked by sensors. At the heart of the “Mojo Lens” is a MicroLED display with a 14K resolution the size of a single grain of sand. According to “Mojo Vision”, the image is always displayed sharply, regardless of whether the user is looking at an object close up or from a distance. In addition, integrated motion sensors stabilize the image depending on the position of the eyes and head. Other image sensors can detect incident ambient light and automatically adjust the brightness and, if necessary, the contrast based on this. In future, these sensors will also be able to recognize objects in the real world. For the power supply, the company relies on a battery in the form of a thin film on the lens. This should ensure that the battery lasts for a whole day.
For the time being, “Mojo Vision” is focusing on selling the lens in the medical sector and in industry. Thanks to the integrated image sensors, which can be used to recognize objects in a room, the “Mojo Lens” is ideally suited as an aid for people with a visual impairment. For example, such users could be supported with audio instructions in everyday life as soon as a certain object is viewed in the real world. It would also be possible to visually emphasize the edges of certain objects, increase contrast or enlarge text for people with impaired vision. According to the manufacturer, the contact lens also offers great benefits in the workplace and in industry. Digital information in the worker's field of vision could increase their performance immensely and, for example, automate the training of new personnel. “Mojo Vision also sees a potential area of application in VR gaming. Users of the lens would only need to close their eyes to immerse themselves in the virtual world.
At the beginning of April 2022, “Mojo Vision” will present the “feature complete” prototype to the public for the first time. It already has all the planned technical functions such as the display, battery, ARM0 processor with 5 GHz module, motion sensors, eye tracking and wireless technology for streaming content. This content is generated by a mini-computer that the user puts around their shoulders. According to the manufacturer, wireless streaming achieves very low latency. Furthermore, the “feature complete” prototype has a rudimentary operating system that can be operated using eye movements. All content for the contact lens is displayed directly on the retina in a 15° field of view. However, the built-in MicroLED display can only show the color green and object or spatial recognition is not yet integrated.
At the end of June 2022, “Mojo Vision” started the first internal tests of the “Mojo Lens”. Initially, the company's CEO Drew Perkins tested the “feature complete” prototype in one eye at regular intervals for one hour a day. According to his own statements, he used a digital compass to find his way around the room, looked at images and read text from a kind of virtual teleprompter. From the end of 2022, selected journalists, top athletes and investors will be able to test the lens. The long-term goal of “Mojo Vision” is to obtain FDA (US authority for market surveillance of medical products) approval.
The idea behind the augmented reality contact lens “Mojo Vision” is a technical sensation and almost sounds like science fiction. The “feature complete” prototype has shown how much potential and technology there is in the Californian start-up's product. Whether the lens can prove itself in further tests and when it will be launched on the market is still uncertain.
